About

THE STORY

I hail from the Emerald Isle, land of greenery, sheep, pubs and Guinness. I hear you ask, what the f… does an Irish guy know about 1) food and 2) healthy food, a contradiction in terms, ya. It’s not all potatoes and sheep anymore, well in most places anyway but especially since I moved to the States. Since I started cooking I’ve worked in some great places in Ireland & London so I’ve gotten a broad range of styles in the bag. LA being the mecca of health and fitness (I saw that in Golds gym) has enabled me to focus more on simple, healthy, fresh food which stems from the way I eat. In a nutshell, I’m an Irishman who made his way to L.A. to find fame and fortune (beats rain & potatoes doesn’t it?) I wound up working hard as a private chef where my skills evolved into healthy cooking. My fame came way of my blog and YouTube and viola-The Healthy Irishman was born. Still waiting for the fortune! So if you want some great easy recipes and ideas I’m your man.

MY PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy for how one should achieve a healthy balanced diet is simply to fuel the body with wholesome natural foods. Your body needs constant refueling to maintain a high metabolism thus enabling the body to burn any excess body fat. To achieve this I not only advocate but practice eating smaller portioned meals more frequently throughout the day. This keeps your energy levels at a constant and prevents cravings which ultimately leads to over-indulgence. I don’t use the word “diet” in terms of losing weight; to me it’s a lifestyle that involves making healthy choices based on eating whole foods that are nutritious and delicious.

LOS ANGELES, BEING THE MECCA OF HEALTH AND FITNESS, BECAME THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR GAVAN TO CONTINUE HIS CAREER. IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORKING FOR A NUMBER OF PRESTIGIOUS L.A. BASED CATERING COMPANIES, GAVAN WAS HIRED AS A CONSULTING CHEF ON THE BODY-for-LIFE PROGRAM FOR EAS, A MULTI-NATIONAL SPORTS AND NUTRITION COMPANY, AS WELL AS PERSONAL CHEF TO CINDY CRAWFORD WHO WAS FOLLOWING THE BFL PROGRAM. WITH THIS EXPERIENCE GAVAN ULTIMATELY MADE THE TRANSITION TO BECOMING A PRIVATE CATERER AND MOST REWARDING, BEING A PERSONAL CHEF DEDICATED TO COOKING HEALTHY MEALS. GAVAN ALSO SPECIALIZES IN CUSTOMIZING MENUS ACCORDING TO HIS CLIENTS’ DIETARY REQUIREMENTS. SPECIFICALLY THIS CLIENTELE INCLUDES JAMES CAMERON AND SUZY AMIS AND QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE FRONT MAN JOSH HOMME AND WIFE BRODY DALLE, WHO HIRED GAVAN FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AFTER THEIR FIRST BABY. OTHER HIGH PROFILE CLIENTS INCLUDE PIERCE BROSNAN, RACHEL NICHOLS AND SCOTT STUBER, STACEY SNIDER, DR. LINDA LI AND CELEBRITY CHEF AKASHA RICHMOND.

GAVAN’S HEALTHY RECIPES ARE FEATURED IN AKSAHA RICHMOND’S “HOLLYWOOD DISH” AND IN CELEBRITY FITNESS GURU, KATHY KAEHLER’S BOOK, “FIT AND SEXY FOR LIFE: THE HORMONE-FREE PLAN FOR STAYING SLIM, STRONG, AND FABULOUS IN YOUR FORTIES, FIFTIES, AND BEYOND.”

IN ADDITION TO HIS “DAY JOB” HE HAS CREATED THE HEALTHY IRISHMAN, ESSENTIALLY A MIRROR OF HIS OWN LIFESTYLE, WITH THE HOPE OF EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT HEALTHY EATING. GAVAN’S PHILOSOPHY AND MORE RECIPES CAN BE FOUND AT www.thehealthyirishman.com.
